Augmented Reality has been researched for military usage since a long time now. There are some very interesting application of AR in military. It can help not only in better planning in a battlefield, it can also help in better vision and awareness.
Tactical Augmented Reality is being used in military to get geo-locations of army men. TAR uses a heads up display, which enables night-vision as well. It helps in networking soldiers together and gives them awareness of the exact situation of the battlefield – location of their friends, troops, enemies and any other information they need to know to implement the tactical planning.
TAR also enables sharing of data among soldiers and to the headquarters. This helps in quick planning and providing better commands. It can superimpose a map of Soldier’s operational area over the eye-piece, it can represent other soldiers on the map as well.
AR can enhance military training by creating simulated environments. Simulated environments that are built using Augmented reality creates an illusion that the opposing forces exist. This is not only a cost effective way for training our soldiers, but its also very safe.
There are immense possibilities and usage of augmented reality technology in military. A soldier can aim at foes using the live feed provided from the eyepiece. A soldier equipped with TAR can even point his rifle backwards and see backwards and forwards in a split screen arrangement simultaneously.
